Chassis No. FJ MkII 1041 SOLD
Original owner not known. Advertised in April 1974 Motor Sport as: “Front-engined 1959 single seater Formula Junior Gemini racing car. Interesting hill climb/sprint car.” Telephone 09084 2651 Woburn Sands.
Purchased by Tony Johns for Graeme Steinfort and arrived in Australia in November 1974.
It went through a number of hands, with little racing, until bought by Tony Caldersmith in 1983 and restored to original Gemini specifications.
CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) 5th Category (historic) logbook issued in 1981 (no. N4481) and a Certificate of Description in 1991 (no. L.067.01.01).
Raced pretty continuously from 1983 to 1991.
In 2006 Tony gave it a complete refurbishment and ran it at the Tasman Revival meeting in December 2006. It completed Targeted Scrutiny in 28/08/06.
It has generally run in the Australian Group Lb class (1946 to 1960 racing cars) and been a consistent ‘under 1500cc winner’).
It has a Ford engine Ford gearbox, with Needham close ratios, Twin Webers, near new (one meeting) Dunlop CR65 450×15 and 500×15 tyres.
Geminis ran Series 1 BMC nosepieces in their own magnesium housing. Tony has have two ratios; 4.55 and 4.8. Some spares and special tools.
Further notes:
The only thing different in the engine is the short motor. Tony used the the FJ head, carbys, cam etc. mounted on the 1200 block to run it in some non-FJ events while he built up a new 997 FJ short motor. Tony has the 997 motor which has not been built up due to other projects taking priority. The 1200 block has the original Cosworth A6 cam in it. Remote gear shift removed and replaced with center shift but easily replacable. In the UK people are suggesting to Tony somewhere around (A$80,000). the car is in Australia and Tony would be open to offers.
